I try so very hard to source real food – which sadly needs to be said in that way in America today – and find myself straying from the path, or falling off the wagon, more often than not.
Take dessert, for example. I’ve done my best to give up milk (sinus problems, arthritis issues, animal welfare, etc.) so I thought I had found a wonderful replacement for that familiar pint of ice cream . . . Graeter’s Sorbet! Yay for me, right? It’s non-dairy, low in additives (just try reading most every food label these days and you’ll get my point), and made with fruit. Sounds like I’ve hit the jackpot, right? WRONG. I ate the obligatory pint of sorbet around 9:00 pm. Went to bed. Woke up BLOATED like a corpse. WHY??? Then I looked more closely at the label. IT HAS 133 GRAMS OF SUGAR in that pint. What does that mean? That is the equivalent of over 40 ounces of COCA-COLA!!! Would I swig down a gigantic coke before bed (or ever) - - - NO WAY. But that is what I did when eating my ‘fruit’ dessert. I stood in shock disbelieving the magnitude of what I had just figured out. It’s like I have looked all around looking for the problem, completely missing what was right in front of me: IT’S THE SUGAR! THE SUGAR. THE SUGAR! On an emotional level, I am so deflated. I TRIED my best to source something good for me; something that feels like a treat on a hot summer’s day. I trusted my local store to sell me something ‘dairy-free’. Yep, it IS dairy-free. But in no way healthy. Bodies aren’t built to consume that much sugar. And the coke example really clarified it for me. So, I guess the ONLY answer left is to make my own (and I am REALLY tired of having to create EVERYTHING I eat). I am so frustrated with food in America. Or its food-like-substances that the factories are pushing on us. ~N. July 25, 2023

Without making a BLOG about it, here is my breakfast today. Soak buckwheat groats for 30-mins (in filtered water). Rinse. Add enough water to cover. Cook to the boil . Add frozen blueberries. When water has evaporated down enough, add organic plant milk and cinnamon. Pour into bowl and add walnut butter. Top with dried pineapple cubes - Good Foods Coop YUM - and healthy! ~N. |
